When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

A lot of tourists ask us when the best time is to go to Tanzania. There isn’t just one right answer. It depends on what you like, where you want to go, how much money you have, and what you want to see. This page tells you everything you need to know about the best times to visit Tanzania.

Dry Season (June to October and December to February): The nice weather and great chances to see wildlife make these months perfect for safaris and trips to the beach. You can expect hotel prices to go up and parks and sites to be busier, though.

Midseason, which lasts from March to November, is a good time to visit because hotel prices are average and there aren’t as many tourists. Even though the weather can change and some sites may not be open because of rain, you can still see a lot of wildlife and have a more relaxed safari experience.

The wet season, which lasts from April to May, is great for tourists on a budget because it’s when hotel prices are lowest and parks are least crowded. The heavy rains make the scenery bright and lush, but the weather can change your trip plans.

Day by day breakdown

Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport for your climb

When you get to Kilimanjaro International Airport, our Tanzania Zanzibar Safari guide will be there to meet you. After the trip, he drops you off at your hotel where you can rest.
Getting ready for your climb: Before you start your climb, you meet your guide. He tells you about the climb and gives you important tips on what to wear, what to bring, and how to make it as easy as possible.

Day 2: Machame route (1/7) | Machame Gate (1,800 m/5,905 ft) – Machame Camp (2,835 m/9,301 ft)

In the morning, our guide will pick you up at your hotel and take you to Machame Gate, the start of your amazing Kili climb. As you go up through the beautiful scenery, you’ll go from lush rainforests to heather moorlands. The Machame Camp is on the edge of the forest with a health zone and can be reached after a five- to six-hour walk. Always remember to drink a lot of water on your first day at this height!

Day 3: Machame route (2/7) | Machame Camp (2,835 m/9,301 ft) – Shira Camp (3,839 m/12,595 ft)

The second day on the mountain starts with a nice, but a bit harder, climb. You first go by a small circular cliff called the picnic rock. From there, you can see Kibo (one of Kilimanjaro’s peaks) and Shira (one of the other volcanic peaks) in a beautiful way. From the picnic rock, there is a beautiful trail that leads to Shira Camp, where you can rest and eat lunch. You can get used to the air by taking a walk to the Lava Tower, which is 4,630 meters high and 2 km long.

Day 4: Machame route (3/7) | Shira Camp (3,839 m/12,595 ft) – Lava Tower (4,630 m/15,190 ft) – Barranco Camp (3,950m/12,959 ft)

You walk from Shira Camp to lunch at the beautiful Lava Tower. This part of the climb goes up and down a lot and has some beautiful views along the way. To make the most of this longer hike, you should find your ideal speed. The higher elevation may make you feel a little uneasy. When you’re done with lunch, you’ll go down to Barranco Camp, which is at the base of the huge and very steep Barranco Wall.

Day 5: Machame route (4/7) | Barranco Camp (3,950 m/12,959 ft) – Karanga Camp (4,040 m/13,254 ft)

You leave Barranco Camp for the Barranco Wall after breakfast. A lot of people love this part of the climb. You can see the Kibo Volcano and Mount Meru in all their glory from the top of the Barranco Wall.

After a while, the walk to Karanga Camp gets harder. Keep the right pace because this path goes up and down a lot. You have lunch at the camp, and then you can take a break and go on a walk to get used to the altitude. The hike will take you to Barafu Camp.

Day 6: Machame route (5/7) | Karanga Camp (4,040 m/13,254 ft) – Barafu Camp (4,645 m/15,239 ft)

Today you walk to Barafu Camp, which is where your climb to Uhuru Peak, which is the top of Kilimanjaro, begins. Around lunchtime, you get to the camp. Rest, and when you’re ready, go on a hike to Kosovo Summit Camp (4,870m) and back to get used to the altitude. As you get ready for the last push to the top around midnight, take in the breathtaking views of the nearby peaks and feel the thrill of camping at a high elevation.

Day 7: Machame route (6/7) | Barafu Camp (4,645 m/15,239 ft) – Uhuru Peak (5,895 m/19,340 ft) – Millenium Camp (3,820 m/ 12,532 ft)

Today is the big day! You start your hike from Barafu Camp at midnight and go to Uhuru Peak. The hardest part of the climb is getting to the top, which is done on good paths. When you get to the top, you can see a stunning sunrise. After a short time at the top, where you can enjoy your ultimate victory, you slowly make your way down to the beautiful Millennium Camp.

Day 8: Machame route (7/7) | Millenium Camp (3,820 m/12,532 ft) – Mweka Gate (1,640 m/5,380 ft) – Hotel

There is a tropical jungle where the Millennium Camp is located. When you wake up today, you’ll feel better because you’re not as high up and because you reached the top the day before. You can easily walk to Mweka Gate, which is the entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park, after breakfast.

After that, your car takes you back to the hotel so you can rest. Memories, views, and a real sense of success that you will never forget are waiting for you!

Day 9 – 10: Flight home from Kilimanjaro International Airport after the climb
